The city of Vrútky has celebrated the 95th anniversary of organized sport in 2004. Thanks to its position the city offers excellent opportunities for sports and recreation. In the summer season there are good conditions for water sports at the newly reconstructed swimming pool as well as an open water area on the border of Vrútky and Lipovec. Hiking paths lead from Vrútky to Minčol, with a continuation to Martinské hole, or the Castle of Strečno. Another tourist route leads to Kľačianska Magura with a possibility to reach Panošiná, or to get on the route to Malý Fatranský Kriváň and Veľký Fatranský Kriváň as far as Šútovský waterfall. Cycle-tourism is supported by interesting cycle-routes from Vrútky through the villages at the foot of the Malá Fatra natural park with the possibility to go on to Orava and Liptov. In the winter season there are excellent conditions for downhill skiing in the skiing resort Piatrová, and nearby resort at Martinské hole and for cross-country skiing in Jedľoviny. The town-hall prepares a permanent exhibition of downhill skiing in the region of Turiec.The sports history of Vrútky is famous for the results of its football team, at present water polo is more successful, as a women team from Vrútky has been the best in Slovakia for seven seasons. There is a football field in Vrútky, a sportshall of TJ Sokol - a sports association, hockey ball field, newly reconstructed summer swimming pool, just opened premises for body building and fitness including sauna and several tennis courts.
